Era una región cocalera y hoy destaca por su variado futuro empresarial. San Martín y, sobre todo, la generosa Tarapoto, ha emprendido un trabajo que va más allá de limpiar su nombre: ha descubierto la importancia del valor agregado en su producción y deja atrás la agricultura convencional.
"Cultivar piñón blanco es un negocio de largo plazo, pero queremos intentarlo porque hay potencial", dice Alfredo Acuña, presidente de la Asociación de Agricultores Agroenergéticos de Leoncio Prado, comunidad que recoge este fruto para la elaboración de biodiésel. Hasta ahora, 65 productores siembran piñón en 120 hectáreas y acaba de inaugurarse una pequeña planta de producción en la que la cooperación alemana invirtió cerca de US$50 mil, además de asesoría técnica.
TABACO Y UVACHADO
Aunque muchos se inician con apoyo de las ONG, los negocios de Tarapoto se han vuelto sostenibles y dignos de financiamiento. Esa experiencia la vivió Industrias Mayo, cuya marca La Orquídea produce chocolates de pura manteca de cacao. "Entre 1997 y el 2000 fuimos un experimento de la cooperación española para erradicar la coca. Hoy somos cuatro socios que nos abastecemos de insumos de los productores de Tarapoto", dice Gladis Linarez, gerenta administrativa.
En el 2008, sus ventas se triplicaron respecto al año anterior (S/.50 mil), gracias a que la marca se enfocó en el cliente turístico. "Los chocolates no bajan de S/.4 por 100 g y es un souvenir usado como regalo en hoteles del Cusco y Tarapoto. También hemos hecho alianzas para incluir la visita de turistas a nuestra planta", agrega. Mientras La Orquídea pasa por todos los requerimientos para obtener el sello orgánico, acaba de lanzar bombones con relleno de maracuyá y mermeladas.
Hacer habanos a mano también es una habilidad bien aprovechada por Tabacalera del Oriente, antigua empresa del Estado que desde 1997 le pertenece a Nicola Felice, un italiano que se enamoró de Tarapoto y de una de sus hijas. "Aunque la mayoría del tabaco lo vendemos en estado natural a EE.UU. desde el 2008 estamos creciendo en la producción de habanos", dice.
El año pasado produjo medio millón de habanos y calcula que, con el aumento de clientes de España y de los distribuidores exclusivos de Lima, la cifra llegará al millón en el 2009.
Por su parte, Liley Vela, ingeniera agrónoma y gerenta de La Jungla, siente que la uva de la selva (mucho más ácida que la costeña) fue maltratada por años. "Artesanal era sinónimo de malhecho, por lo que decidí darle más calidad y presentación al uvachado, el licor de bandera del oriente". En el 2001, La Jungla buscó el mercado turístico y, a la fecha, ha ampliado su línea a licores de cortezas (7 raíces, RC y el mojadito) y a cocteles exóticos, como las cremas de piña, café y maracuyá.
Tarapoto tiene suficiente atractivo turístico como para sorprender con sus emprendimientos locales y llegar a más mercados. Felizmente, su crecimiento no depende de dinero, como suele pensarse de las provincias, sino de involucrar a más actores con un solo fin.
La energía del piñón blanco
En Tarapoto, 65 agricultores de la Asociación Leoncio Prado cultivan 120 hectáreas de piñón blanco. Se calcula que, por cada tonelada, recibirán US$900 al año. "Ellos ponen la mano de obra y las tierras; nosotros los apoyamos con la asesoría técnica", dice Gerd Seidler, coordinador del proyecto Aceite Vegetal Natural de la Cooperación Alemana DED. Se calcula que por cada 6 toneladas de piñón blanco (la producción de una hectárea) se obtienen 2 mil litros de aceite natural para automóviles.
Cuatro proyectos similares se están ejecutando en Lambayeque, Ica y Pasco. En total se ha invertido US$2,5 millones.
